The advertisement on the bus was fairly mild, just a page from the Bible and the address of a Christian Web site. But when Ariane Sherine, a comedy writer, looked on the Web site in June, she was startled to learn that she and her nonbelieving friends were headed straight to hell, to ??spend all eternity in torment. And then she thought, how about putting some atheist messages on the bus, as a corrective to the religious ones? And so were planted the seeds of the Atheist Bus Campaign, an effort to disseminate a godless message to the greater public. When the organizers announced the effort in October, they said they hoped to raise a modest $8,000 or so. But something seized peoples imagination. Supported by the scientist and author Richard Dawkins, the philosopher A. C. Grayling and the British Humanist ociation, among others, the campaign raised nearly $150,000 in four days. Now it has more than $200,000, and on Tuesday it unveiled its advertisements on 800 buses across Britain. Theres probably no God, the advertisements say. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life. Spotting one of the buses on display at a news conference in Kensington, pers-by were struck by the unusual message. Although Australian atheists were refused permission to place advertisements on buses saying, Atheism: Sleep in on Sunday mornings, the British effort has been striking in the lack of outrage it has generated. The Methodist Church, for instance, said it welcomed the campaign as a way to get people to talk about God. Across Britain, we are used to being bombarded by religious interests, he said, not just Christians, but other religions as well, who seem to think that they have got a God-given right to propagandize. Next week, the Atheist Bus Campaign plans to place 1,000 advertisements in the subway system, featuring enthusiastic quotations from Emily Dickinson, Albert Einstein, Douglas Adams and Katharine Hepburn. An interesting element of the bus slogan is the word probably, which would seem to be more suited to an Agnostic Bus Campaign than to an atheist one. Mr. Dawkins, for one, argued that the word should not be there at all.

i did this vlog a few weeks ago, and then i also used a similar premise for a Momversation about raising your kids with religion or not. My agnostic self can sometimes be tortured after a few rounds of "Silent Night." Now that the cold hard splash of 2009 is on me, i think i'm over it.

My video in summary 1: FranzDuckVideos tries to rebut the Kalam argument by saying that beofre the big bang there were no laws of physics. This is fine and dandy but the problem here is that we are dealing with metaphysics. The first principle of metaphysics is that being does not come from nonbeing. Furthermore we should say that spatiotemp existence has a cause because everything we see begin to exist has a cause for its beginning to exist. Some Atheists like to say that because we've never seen anything come into existence ex nihilo, that the first premise of the Kalam argument is baseless. The problem here is that the atheist is uming that the only way to describe the ontology of something is to describe its substance. The problem here is that the atheist is uming naturalism, which is a positive claim. Furthremore, the ontology of an object can be measured by its properties. Since some objects, like people, buildings, or computer mice, have essential properties which did not exist, like personhood, height, or plasticity, then it logically follows that these objects began to exist. Since this is a metaphysical contention, it is a necessary truth. Since it is a necessary truth, it follows that the universe MUST have a cause for it began to exist. Hence, the Kalam argument is vindicated 2: FranzDuckVideos gives his reason for not being more open to the possibility of a supernatural explanation for the data surrounding Christian origins. The problem here is that FranzDuckVideos is, once again, erting Naturalism. Naturalism is not a mere lack of belief in a supernatural, but is rather a positive claim that reality is exhausted by spatiotemp existence. Being a positive claim, it requires positive evidence. Since there is none, Franz's naturalism is unwarranted 3: Finally FranzDuckVideos discusses pagan parallels. The problem with this theory is that this theory was at one time very popular among scholars of the field, but really collapsed since the 1930s. Since the 1950s you really will not find a single article in any major academic journal espousing this thesis. The reasons for this are threefold 1: The parallels are spurious. There is no evidence for these parallels between Christianity and pre-christian pagan religions. Scholars have tried to salvage this thesis by saying that the post-christian evidence is evidence for the conditions of the pre-christian religion. The problem here is that mystery religions, not being interested in any sort of doctrine or dogma, changed radically throughout the centuries 2: There is no evidence for a borrowing relationship. This is significant because many of the supposed pagan elements in the New Testament are much more easily explained by a Jewish origin. This caused many scholars to drop their thesis that Christianity should be compared to a pagan backdrop and caused them to instead accept that The New Testament should be compared to a Jewish backdrop. This movement in New Testament scholarship is known as "The Jewish Reclaimation of Jesus" 3: The methodology of the creation of these parallels was methodologically and foundationally flawed. First off, it was the scholars themselves who decided which elements were important and which elements were merely incidental. Through this, scholars were able to point out and grossly and criminally excaggerate minute details and simply brush aside the differences between the New Testament and the older pagan religions. This is fundamentally a circular argument. Furthermore, Historical characters can and often do fall into these fabricated patterns. R.F. Littledale once showed through parallel arguments that Max Mueller, a great Oxford theologian who was an avid proponent of this pagan parallels argument, did not actually exist.
