You see, i have not actually "watched" this film. i had to force myself to even stomach fast-forwarding through the damn thing. But i'm a huge Patrick Swayze fan. Let me repeat that for all you haters: i'm a huge Patrick Swayze fan. From 'Roadhouse,' to 'Point Break,' to 'Red Dawn'... the man has given us gold. The fact that he's fighting pancreatic cancer right now is such a bummer to me. Because, as evidenced by roles in movies like 'Donnie Darko,' Swayze still has much to offer us. And it would be sad if we were robbed of his talents. Unfortunately, it seems his talents didn't stretch to this 1987, 'Road Warrior' knock-off. And it is here that the predicament takes hold. For while i love Patrick Swayze films... i think i love 'Mad Max' movies even more. Not to get all meta (don't mind if i do!), but Transamerica yarns the story of Bree, who is technically still Stanley at time of scene, who is really the incomparable--and almost unrecognizable--entirely XX chromo's Felicity Huffman, stuffing and faux-tucking herself into character. Jame Gumb, your ladyposing was for naught. i was interested in a review of this particular suit up because A: homegirl gives more thought to her figure and anointing her membranes than i do pre-flight from home and B: it represents more than just the prep for mayhem and kicking various es into crudish smithereens. The simple act of watching a person ready themselves for the world seems uninspiring enough--i'd like to think we all at least put on clean skivvies and brush our shit on the regs prior to interactin' and conversatin' (or conversate, the rap malaprop). But it is not about the transformation into someone else for Bree; it is the manifestation of the person already there, the Freudian struggle she fisticuffs daily between ego and cultural super-ego, constantly skirting the id in a swash of pink overload. And even if you don't really like Martin Short (which i don't) and have been disappointed with Chevy Chase since his SNL days (which i am) and wonder why Steve Martin can't always be The Jerk (which i do), their performances and timing here is priceless. Also, there's an actor named Fred Asparagus and it makes me laugh every time i see his name in the credits. The movie is about a trio of silent film era actors that, being fired from their jobs, go to Mexico to put on a show with the infamous El Guapo, not realizing that it isn't a show and these real bandits are trying to kill them. Well goddamn. if there was ever one thing that could be more beautiful than watching a horde of wobbly-legged zombies eat their way through a bus-load of third-graders, it would be watching a Ukrainian-born model in a highly impractical, yet aesthetically pleasing nomad-chic ensemble chop off their undead heads with a set of twin Nepalese blades. Sounds impossibly cool, huh? it is, and in the third installment of the action/horror Resident Evil saga, series heroine Alice (Milla Jovovich) does not only this, but she kicks, punches, shoots, slashes, chops, stomps, and telekinetically body-slams every walking corpse in sight (and looks good doing it). For me, one of the most appealing aspects of the series is the over-the-top acrobatic (and often violent) methods in which series bad- Alice dispatches her enemies. Who pulled Danny Glover off a bomb rigged toilet? Who single handedly won the American Revolution? He's been an old west card hustler, he taught math and literature to a bitchy kid (despite being ostracized because of his ground up face), and i'm still a little salty that William Wallace didn't win The Gathering. All of that is child's play when compared to the calm, cool vengeance named Porter. Mel plays it to the hilt as the one named death dealer in this story of redemption and revenge. This simple utterance from the Other Bounty Hunter (not Ug who takes the form of 80's rocker Johnny Steele but the one with an identity crisis that keeps shape shifting) sums up the spirit of this tepid suit-up scene. Critters. This is what humans call those perpetually hungry, rollie-pollie, escaped convicts from Prison Asteroid-Sector 17 maximum security holding facility. We call it like we see it: those things eating our cattle, killing our loved ones, shooting poisonous darts at us are low-down, surly critters. However, the term doesn't seem to embody the magnitude of the situation at hand. Crights. This is what shape shifting, intergalactic Bounty Hunters call them. Said with the trace of an English accent; it resonates with authority. i invite you, right now, to try this out loud. Did you do it? No? if you did, you will most likely feel more sophisticated and dare i add more 'bad-' than someone who merely calls them critters. After all, they are Crights. But Keith loves Amanda. in the world of the John Hughes 80s rom-com/coming of age story, this is familiar territory. Though, similar to "Pretty in Pink", John Hughes didn't direct "Some Kind Of Wonderful". He wrote and produced it. What also ties those films together, is that they were both directed by Howard Deutch. (Deutch would go on to have a hat trick with "The Great Outdoors" one year later) What makes Deutch's first two films relevant here is that, i've mentioned in previous reviews, that i've long been on the look-out for the pre-Prom Night suit-up scene ritual. i thought for sure i would have had it with "Pretty in Pink". i was wrong. But i was curious to see if it had yet another suit-up in it closer to the climax. it doesn't. But before i knew that, i pretty much had to fast-forward through the entire movie. i considered it a trip down memory lane, as i don't think i've seen this movie in over a decade. First, try and digest the plot: John Rambo's friend and former boss, Colonel Trautman (played by the late Richard Crenna) gets captured by the Russians, while freedom fighting in Afghanistan. Rambo has to then go rescue him. Only he won't do it alone. He'll have help from a plucky group of renegade fighters that live in the desert and are led by Omar Shariff. We know them today... as the Taliban! Yes, John Rambo, the 1980's symbol of the American hero, single-handedly fighting the Cold War, teamed up with the ragtag gang that would, thirteen years later, declare war on America soil by blowing up the Twin Towers on 9.11. http://suitupscene.com for more awesome suit-up scenes! Ah, youth. All i needed then were some clearly bounded good and bad guys, some conflict, and a happy resolution. And the more things blew up, the better the movie was. i watched "Ewoks: The Battle for Endor" again, hoping to reconnect with some of that, but instead of cheering "Ah-HA! i was left asking, "Why?" And there are a lot of why's; why do these marauding bandits have all these laser guns, but think that a power cell is magic; why does Noa's ship have open canopies for the turrets to stick out when it's supposed to go into the vacuum of space; why do the Ewoks only make a hole big enough for Cindel and Wicket, when they could have just broken one more board and they all could be free... and more. And i tried to keep a light-hearted, open mind about the whole thing, but my disappointment got the best of me. i realized while watching, that i didnt remember hardly any of this movie, though i must have seen it five times when i was younger. i now know why, the majority of this story was so badly done, i probably blocked it out. Youve got post-apocalyptic destruction, intense action sequences, and a bad in an eye patch that goes by the name of Snake (and sometimes Plissken, if you can catch him on a good day). in 1996, when i first saw the trailer for the sequel to this sci-fi/action clic in which our eye patch rocking anti-hero was back, this time to escape from Los Angeles of all places, without hesitation, i pissed my pants. During a semester of my college years, a poster of Tony Manero shaking his stuff on the disco floor, adorned my dorm room wall. it wasn't that i was a fan of the movie. We see it in everything from 'First Blood' to 'Commando' to 'Police Academy'. But mind you though, there also exists a sub-genre of this weapon fixation, whereby, we see heroes toting custom weapons. Take the red lazer site trend, seen in movies like 'Cobra' and 'Tango And Cash'. Or the 'helicopter Gatling gun', seen in Schwarzenegger gems like 'Predator' and 'Terminator 2' (granted, the later was from 1991, but screw you). it's of this sub-genre that a special moment in cinema exists in my childhood memory. i remember staying up late, and watching movies on HBO. Once all the family entertainment was over, HBO would program seedy 80s schlock fests like 'Reform School Girls', or 'Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama', or 'Eating Raoul'. But a year after it launched Arnold Schwarzenegger onto the cinema landscape, a far superior film would follow in its wake... Don Coscarelli's timeless fantasy, "The Beastmaster"! So the question begs asking: is "The Beastmaster" a poor man's "Conan The Barbarian"? Or is it the other way around? i mean, don't get me wrong. i love Arnold as much as any other self-respecting film geek. But can his thunderous pecs rival Marc Singer's blazing abs? Can Conan's puny sidekick, Subotai, compete with Dar's jungle friends? We're talking a black tiger, a falcon, and don't forget, not one, but two awesome ferrets named 'Codo' and 'Podo'! Does James Earl Jone's 'Thulsa Doom' out-do Rip Torn's 'Maax' in pure dread? (Doom may indulge in orgies, but Maax throws toddlers into sacrificial fires!). Let's also talk ladies. Does Conan's squeeze, 'Valeria', come anywhere close to Tanya Robert's incredibly smoking slave girl, 'Kiri'. Before you answer, remember that Tanya Roberts has a topless scene in "The Beastmaster", and that Dar actually uses his tiger to help him scam his way into making out with her!
