 Stewart J. Cort

The Lakes' first 1000-footer had its start in the yards of the ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation of Pascagoula, Mississippi, in 1970. The unusual-looking vessel was known as "Hull 1173" but acquired the nickname "Stubby" due to its appearance. Hull 1173 consisted of the Cort's bow and stern sections, 182 feet long and 75 feet wide (the reduced width was necessary to p through the St. Lawrence Seaway and Welland C locks). The vessel made its way up to the Lakes in 1971 where it was cut apart (following the "Cut Here" instructions painted on the hull) and the two ends were fastened to the 818-foot long midbody at Erie Marine in Erie, Pennsylvania.  Algocape

Originally launched as the Richelieu (3) for Canada Steamship Lines on Nov. 25, 1966; this vessel was built by Davie Shipbuilding, Lauzon, PQ. At the time, the Richelieu was designated as the flagship of the CSL fleet sailing for the first time April 4, 1967 from Quebec City to Pointe Noire, PQ in ballast to load ore for Hamilton, ON. This standard Seaway-sized bulk carrier is powered by a Sulzer 6RD76 6-cylinder 9,470 installed horsepower diesel engine. She is equipped with a bow thruster. With 17 hatches feeding six compartments, this straight-decker can carry 26,100 tons at maximum Seaway draft of 26 feet and is capable of carrying 29,950 tons at her maximum mid-summer draft of 29 feet 1/2 inch. The Richelieu was the last straight-decker built for the CSL fleet that has yet to be converted to a self-unloader. Under the CSL flag, her cargoes consisted mostly of grain and ore. in 1992, the Richelieu carried an unusual deck load of steel vats from Thunder Bay, ON to Matane, PQ. The Richelieu only made one trip in 1993. She was towed as a barge from Thunder Bay to Windsor, ON with a load of canola. in 1994, the Richelieu joined the Algoma Central Marine fleet being renamed Algocape (2). This name has been ociated with the Algoma fleet since 1987. The 714 foot 11 inch steam turbine powered Algocape (1) was launched in 1960 as the Carol Lake, sailing for Carryore Ltd. until being purchased in 1987 by Algoma. P & H Shipping acquired the Algocape (1) in 1994 renaming the vessel Mapleglen (2). The Mapleglen was sold in 2002 to Canada Steamship Line, she continues to sail as part of the CSL fleet. The "Algocape" name comes from her owner's name "Algo" (Algoma) and "cape" possibly from Cape Gargantua (located on Lake Superior's east shore). The Algocape(2) currently sails under the management of Seaway Marine Transport, St. Catherines, ON (partnership of Algoma Central and Upper Lakes Group). Her cargoes continue to consist primarily of grain products and ore; though, she has been noted to have carried bulk cement and coke. Typically, the Algocape would load grain products in Thunder Bay, ON for Baie Comeau, PQ; then in ballast to Sept isles, PQ to load ore for Hamilton, ON; then in ballast back to Thunder Bay. The ports may vary slightly but the load pattern remains basically the same. Overall dimensions Length 729'09" Beam 75'04" Depth 39'08" Capacity (tons) 29,950 Credits- Boatnerd.com

Oglebay Norton Marine Services "river class" ships

On August 2, 2006, Oglebay Norton Marine Services Co. completed the sale of the Earl W. Oglebay and her 2 "river cl" fleet mates Wolverine and David Z. Norton to the Wisconsin and Michigan Steamship Co. of Lakewood, OH for $18.7 million. With this sale, Oglebay Norton Co. phased out its subsidiary Oglebay Norton Marine Services Co. and removed itself from the marine shipping industry thus bringing to a close a long tradition of service on the Great Lakes. The Wisconsin and Michigan Steamship Co. is a subsidiary of Sand Products Corp. owned by the McKee family. Renamed Earl W. in early 2007, the vessel was commercially operated by Lower Lakes Transportation Co. of Williamsville, NY under a time charter agreement with her new owners with an option to buy the vessel off charter being extended to Grand River Navigation, the U.S. vessel-owning affiliate of Lower Lakes Transportation. Her trade routes have remained essentially the same.

 Breaking Benjamin - Breath

i see nothing in your eyes, and the more i see the less i like. is it over yet, in my head? i know nothing of your kind, and i won't reveal your evil mind. is it over yet? i can't win. So sacrifice yourself, and let me have what's left. i know that i can find the fire in your eyes. i'm going all the way, get away, please. [Chorus:] You take the breath right out of me. You left a hole where my heart should be. You got to fight just to make it through, 'cause i will be the death of you. This will be all over soon. Pour salt into the open wound. is it over yet? Let me in. So sacrifice yourself, and let me have what's left. i know that i can find the fire in your eyes. i'm going all the way, get away, please. You take the breath right out of me. You left a hole where my heart should be. You got to fight just to make it through, 'cause i will be the death of you. i'm waiting, i'm praying, realize, start hating. You take the breath right out of me. You left a hole where my heart should be. You got to fight just to make it through, 'cause i will be the death of you.

 Canadian Steamship Lines

CSL had humble beginnings in Canada East in 1845, operating river boats on the St. Lawrence River in general commerce. Subsequent growth over the years was tied to expansion of the c system on the upper St. Lawrence River (the precursor to the St. Lawrence Seaway), and to a new Welland C connecting to the upper Great Lakes. By 1924, CSL purchased its first self-unloader bulk carrier, the Collier, and also owned a shipyard in Collingwood, Ontario where CSL and competitor lakers were being built. CSL also came into ownership of one of Canada's largest shipyards, Davie Shipbuilding, in Lauzon, Quebec for a period in the 1960s-1970s and was at one time a major penger line on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River.
